Biden Denounces Israel’s Settlement Decision

biden_abbas_85U.S. Vice President Joe Biden denounced the plan for new Israeli construction in eastern Jerusalem, underlining that such a move undermines the Palestinians' faith in the new peace talks. The two sides should forge an atmosphere capable to support the peace talks and not torpedo them, Biden told reporters after his meeting with Palestinian President. Mahmoud Abbas, on his part, argued that the construction of Israeli houses in eastern Jerusalem threatens the peace talks and requested the settlement decision be reversed.

Sectarian Violence in Nigeria Leaves Scores of Dead

Quake 6.0 Hits Eastern Turkey

seismografoiA strong earthquake, magnitude 6.0 killed 41 villagers and injured at least 60 in eastern Turkey early on Monday. The quake struck at 4:32 am local time centered on the sparsely populated area of Basyurt in Elazig province. There is fear for a larger number of dead as many people are trapped under the rubble.

Iceland Voters Reject Compensation Plan

Iceland's voters overwhelmingly rejected a plan to pay Britain and the Netherlands to reimburse customers of a failed Icelandic bank, Icesave. With about 98% of the votes counted Sunday 93 % of voters said no to the plan. Iceland's prime-minister said the center-left government will remain in power and will continue to negotiate to reach an agreement while the Finance Minister said Britain and the Netherlands intend to do the same. Recent developments were subject of comment by EU Commission spokesman who sped to disengage referendum results from the country's admission to the EU.

Bloody Elections in Iraq

Iraq's parliamentary election has been hit by multiple attacks, with at least 35 people being killed and 60 injured. Iraqi Prime-minister Nouri Maliki called on voters to turn out in large numbers, saying that participation would boost democracy. This is the second parliamentary election held after the fall of Sadam Husein. Election procedure is considered a crash test in view of withdrawal of US troops.
